It sounds like sometimes it shows nothing at all, and sometimes shows 50ns ?

Yes, sometimes I get blank screen, some times pulse train with missing pulses in between. The scope doesn't seem to trigger at this pulse width.

Is that on a digital, or analog channel, and what amplitude does it show ?

Analog channel 5V TTL signal. Probably in digital channels it will be better.

What was the sample rate setting, for 50ns results ?

since I use single channel it must be 144 MS/Sec at 100ns/dev timescale automatically set.
