I guess this means that NXP will now accelerate their withdrawal of the 8051 product line so that it will probably all be EOL in around 12-18 months time..
I doubt it will happen soon, there has been new releases (5V LPC9, VC ...) but if a given chip does not sell in a decent quantity it will not make sense to continue it. Another reason for the demise of the smaller chips will be that the college grads coming out now will refuse to use a chip without an OS. Companies without any microcontroller usage in the past will be shocked about the cost of starting off with experienced personnel thus will hire a recent grad and be told "we need an OS to make the light dimmer thingy" and not know that the statement is false.
