I see more potential in the low-end low-pin-count (and cheap) microcontroller than just be a controller of a simplistic device - "toy" - application. It has been discussed here more than once: they provide a nice way to split functionality in a more complex design.

While there are already "multi-core" devices around, they may be less flexible than a "let's stitch it together from these cheap chips" solution.
