It's better to go directly to C. A lot of people knows Pascal in general, but if you get stuck with a problem related to real hardware, a lot fewer people will be able to help you. Almost all sample code you can find is in C, and almost all developers you will find on web forums is using C. Yes, I'm starting to realize that. :-) My decision to go with a form of BASIC seems to have been something of a subconscious prejudice... since it was the only language (aside from FORTRAN...) that was taught in my high-school computers courses. Later on, I was exposed to Pascal and FORTH - and Pascal struck me as a language that combined structure with readability. That said, though - I'm going to take the advice of the majority, and try working with C instead. I've picked up a couple of books on the subject - Essential C 2nd Edition and one titled 'Learning C in 10 Easy Steps', which sounds like a good entry-level book to get me started. Seems I've got some UN-learning to do... :-) |
