Thanks for all the info, everyone. You've given this relative newbie quite a bit to think about. :-)

Since I've got the port pins to work with, I'll probably just take that route and skip the MMIO option. I *may* have to write some custom routines to support whatever LCD I wind up using... because the BASCOM manual suggests that its' built-in driver routines only support 4-bit mode, and some of the devices I'm looking into don't do that.

I'm guessing that, if I use Port0 as my data lines, I'll still have to use pull-up resistors...?
