Recently, I've been buying the integrated PCB's offered on eBay for about 2 dollars or less, which have a MAX3232A and a DE9 connector compatible with most PC serial ports and the associated cable. These (just one example

) cost very little and seem to work just fine.

I've purchased several of these, and it's not a bad idea to order just what you want, since the price seems to be around $1US each if you search for the lowest price, and buy them in pairs, and that includes postage to the U.S.
