What I said was that the documentation was poorly synchronized with the softare in current release. The reason, of course, is that the code is on one version, while the doc's are lagging several, in some cases, quite many, versions behind.
It's not worse than Windows, or other OS' that are out there, as Windows, for example, simply is distributed without documentation. When there's no documentation telling you what it's supposed to do, there's really no way to blame the publisher when it doesn't do what you think it should. RE Yes, but for a randomly selected open-source program found on the net. Not any getty program you have shown to have any real relationship to Linux. Don't you get it - there are lots of students who are requested to write their own getty program as a school assignment? Almost all of the standard, smaller/simpler unix tools do exists in the hundreds or thousands just because someone wants to (or are requested to) write their own. Obviously, a lot of these implementations do end up on the network. So why not comment on any of the getty implementations that are actually in use with any more known Linux distribution? Just so you know you aren't basing your arguments about a complete operating system on the handiwork of a student? Talking about Windows - yes, it's distributed with limited amounts of documentation. But let's not ignore the official M$ documentation that are available on the net if you bother to visit MSDN, MSN etc. It's an established method, to not distribute more technical documentation because of distribution costs, maintainance costs and the fact that the majority of users can't understand a fraction of the information. But have you, Richard, really spent a couple of days pouring through the information available on Microsofts web servers? In the end, you never end up with specific examples that really can be seen to be relevant to the targets you try to blame. Why not talk about something specific - what is your view on Microsofts documentation about the NTFS file system? What it does? What it doesn't do? What the API are? How you can extend it with reparse points? Yes, Richard. Why can't you ever go on the attack with specific examples where you do show that you have spent time really getting into the issue? We still haven't seen any reference to that badly documented getty you talked about - you have a link to the home site? |
