Apple, who still has their infamous "price doesn't matter, quality does" mantra (talk about whistling past the graveyard - tell it to BetaMax.) That's completely utterly wrong. One more time for the world: compare the price of similarly-equipped Apple hardware and Dell hardware, and you'll see that the Apple compares favorably. And in some cases, Apple wins. I just bought a 17" Core I7 MacBook Pro with the 1920 x 1200 display. You can't buy a Windows machine with that configuration for the $2,499 Apple charges. You're over $3,000 for the HP model. Now it's true that Apple doesn't play in the no-margin low end. Why should they? That's where brands go to die. And look at the iPhone line: 3GS for free, 4 for $99, 4S for $199 (all with contract, of course). These prices are right in line with competitor prices. iPad? BlackBerry Playbook fails at a higher price and worse specs and no apps. HP's tablet? Dead and gone; released at a higher price than iPad and again with worse specs. And no apps. And if I'm not mistaken I believe Microsoft hitched their wagon to the Blackberry star. No, they hitched their wagon to Nokia, who dumped Symbian in favor of Windows Phone. Blackberry is flailing in a sea of crap of their own design. -a |
