If you use the same connector, albeit with unique keying so they can't be plugged into the wrong socket, that can take care of nearly every such eventuality, save customer use of unkeyed (self-made) cables or adapters.

For cases such as those, I'd like to provide a mains connection to wake the guy up. My lawyer, sadly, wouldn't allow that, of course ... <sigh> ...
