I think that should be qualified to, "... for less that 20 times that on an 8051"

On 8051, on-chip debug is the exception rather than the rule; On other architecures, where on-chip debug is the norm, the dongles are also cheap or free.

you get the dongle when you buy a devboard

Is that always true?
When I looked at Farnell for my earlier post, it looks like they sell boards alone (no dongle); you have to buy a kit to get both board & dongle?
