Per, I do not disagree just guessed a possible reason.

whatever they do it will be darn difficult for a manufacturer of '51s (except SILabs deviates) to write appnotes not being useable with another manufacturers '51.

I do not know if this is why SILabs switched from derivatives to deviates, but guess that could be part of the reason.
