MinGW and a very large number of other tools have had problems with paths containing spaces.

This happens for any tool where some parts of the tool are executed as separate programs, and parameters are sent on the command line. As soon as quotation marks or break characters are missing, strange things will happen.

Microsoft is quite evil with their "My Documents" directory.
