#170714 - Cost of lenses including mounting? Responding to: ???'s previous message |

Chacun à son goût... Of course, but people will only pay the expected price if they consider the product tastefull. I don't consider taste when buying a power drill. I would definitely consider taste if buying a painting for the wall. There are some people who are buying designer products just because they are expensive. A more "normal" customer buys them because they like the design. Kai Klaas said:
There are optical lense modules on the market, which have to be mounted over the LED, which drastically help to diffuse the light and to make it homogenous. These modules are rather extensive and thick. If such an arrangement is used, there wouldn't be much room for electronics right where the LEDs are. So, I think the electronics is sitting at the border. Sounds like you are thinking anyone have suggested that the electronics are interleaved between the diodes. I haven't seen anyone suggest such placement of the components. The suggestion I had was that the electronics is outside of the character area, or on the backside of the PCB. One thing to consider is that you may buy good slow-ageing white LEDs for $0.05 and if you use 4/character you would get a cost of $22. There are huge numbers of different beam patterns available. Some of them are optimized for giving uniform distribution when placing the diodes in a grid (they are expected to overlap slightly), which means that you may manage with nxn diodes/character and just a plexi diffuser to get quite good results for a very low manufacturing cost. |
