Yes, that's the kind of idea I had in mind.

Also, if the school has a "Design" department, they may have something.

Hobby (hand-held) engravers/routers are readily available quite cheaply.

Someone adept with a craft knife or scalpel could do it by hand.

You could just cut the letters out of a commercially available stencil!

etc, etc,...

I know you Americans like to solve problems by just chucking money at them, but we British are far more ingenious...!
