Having separate LEDs per character would make it easier to have different overlays for different languages - without having to "re-wire" the LEDs OK ... that's reasonable, though I doubt there's need for multiple languages, since that would also require multiple panels if they were to be small. While I doubt that a professor would accept work that looked sloppy or even just crude, I doubt he'd assign a device that "speaks" several languages ... at least not in the U.S. They all seem to believe that everyone else will learn English.
