You can see that all the letters are there - and in the correct order - for forming all the necessary time messages in 5-minute intervals.

It's just a matter of controlling which letters are "ON" (illuminated) and which are not

The thing that I figured would be the most costly is the opaque panel with the text rendered in transparency.

True - they're asking about £700 for the finished item!

But, of course, a student project wouldn't need anything like that level of finish.

Especially for an electronics/programming project, the function would be far more important than the finish. A perfectly adequate finish could be obtained very cheaply.
