In the US a SW enginner may never have seen an IC.
They may have only programed on a PC or UNIX.

A HW enginner May take 1 or 2 programming courses.

Very few colleges here teach embedded. Thats on you. I am told buissnesses expect year 1 for a new grad to mostly teching.

Look at hobbies and extra curicular activities if you want microcontroller experience.

What is the difference between microprocessor and microcontroller?
Use mostly. Some microprocessor become microcontroller when they are past their prime.

You are right, I have vacancy for electrical engineer, electronic engineer, software engineer and technecians in these fields. I ask the candidate where he fits and ask him relevant questions to his qualifications.
