In the US a SW enginner may never have seen an IC.
They may have only programed on a PC or UNIX.

A HW enginner May take 1 or 2 programming courses.

Very few colleges here teach embedded. Thats on you. I am told buissnesses expect year 1 for a new grad to mostly teching.

Look at hobbies and extra curicular activities if you want microcontroller experience.

What is the difference between microprocessor and microcontroller?
Use mostly. Some microprocessor become microcontroller when they are past their prime.
