You need to synchronize with the zero crossings, since you require them to be able to turn off the triac. You don't want to drive the triac during the last part of a half-period and then (because you don't know where the zero-crossing is) continue to drive the gate into the start of the next half-period. That would seriously change the behaviour of your design.
