The use of "software" and "engineering" in the same context has often caused me to cringe. Why? Here in the U.S, after 50 years of evolution, software is still seen as an art form rather than and engineering discipline. It's both. So is hardware engineering, and just about every other form of engineering. Mixing "IT" with Software "Engineering" makes me cringe, too. Makes me cringe too. IT = Incompetent Twits. Haven't seen an IT department yet where it doesn't apply. IT departments don't hire software engineers; they hire Windows monkeys who've learned which buttons to click to make certain things happen. They haven't a clue what really goes on when they click the buttons. Example of the (in)competence of IT dweebs: I couldn't upload to an ftp server because although I could successfully log in, any attempt to upload files caused the server to go out to lunch. While on the phone with the IT monkey, he asked me what program I was using to upload. I told him--ftp. His response was "Yes, but what program are you using?" To him, ftp was a protocol only. Since he had only Windows knowledge, and very little of that, he was completely unaware of the fact that it's also the name of the Unix program. To this day, I still can't upload to their server. I had to put the web page on my own server and have a department head link to it. |
