Bascom 8051 costs $80 with no limits So you're changing the argument from, "it's good" to, "it's cheap". Fair enough - cost is always a consideration in design decisions! But then there are plenty of assemblers available for free - which makes $80 look expensive! how much does a full blown C compiler cost? SDCC is free; Others are available in the $80-ish range; Keil costs a lot! http://www.8052.com/links.phtml But then Keil gives you a lot more than just a compiler. What is the debug support like for BASCOM? How many chips other than the AT80C51ED2 does it run on? If you wanted to do code banking (heaven forbid), could you? Or XDATA banking? etc, etc, etc... As a professional, would you base your tool choice solely on cost? Hi Neil, I didn't say Bascom 8051 was cheap, but it is low cost when comparisons with other compilers are made, and I assure you it is alot easier to use than c, by that I mean syntax. Bascom is equipped with a real time simulator, I designed a complete scientific math set using this simulator and then tested it on the real thing... it all works!! As for what chip variants it supports.. it supports all including any future variants, as in c the user must write the new processor header, so no limitations here!, I chose the AT80C51ED2 because it has virtually limitless headroom. Code switching??.. not sure what you mean? do you mean multitasking?? if so remember this a 8051 and not a AMD64 Venice. The laws for any marketible product are lowest cost without reducing quality.
