10 years ago I was repairing small hearing aid which are analog type, the circuit diagrams I had were nothing more than micro microphone, linear amplifier and some filter depending on the type of hearing aid and a micro speaker and tiny batteries.
The cost by then was around 500$ I also used to repair frequency generation equipment which are used to test your hearing sensitivity to frequency as Joseph pointed out. The worst thing about my job was when I used to clean the ear wax on them, very disgusting! I heard of the digital hearing aid by then which are used to be programmed like a graphic equalizer for each individual which were extremely expensive. you can build one yourself I guess but you can't compete against the small size and high quality.
