Do they automatically filter signals quieter than a certain limit ? It MIGHT even be tractable on a little microcontroller, given the kind of signal rates we are talking about, but a DSP engine isgoing to do a better job. TI do neat development kits you could play with I DID once think it would be very cool to build one which beat down the incoming signal on demand - so you could hear ultrasound when you wanted to: it would be a kind of compensation for your loss.
