Hi Kai,

I am sorry for not having mentioned that I am using a port extender (serial to parallel convertor, then a ULN2003 then relay). Earlier, I did face the issue of 'too late'.

Relays are rated to take 6Vdc to 12 Vdc. Even I concluded that the triac are not the best option here, harmonics and all. 7809 is just a 'very very' little warm, with a small heat sink.

I am using a regulator because I have some more circuits to power up apart from digital electronics. But today I shall try to check if I can do away with the 7809 regulator, after consulting datasheet of other components being powered from 7809.
