Shouldn't the capacitor be in parallel with the resistor?
no, when the relay is off, the cap caharges to V+ and upon energizing delivers Ion-Ihold, the current through the resistor then delivers Ihold. I have never seen the cap parallel to thr resistor, although that might work.
