YEs it has an internal diode but i am wondering how a reversed connection works?

The data sheet says optional diode is connected to pin 2(+) and pin 3(-) for 9091.
This + and - does represent the polarity of the diode or the polarity of the power supply to be connected as both of them are reversed.
(As high voltage of the power supply is connected to the negative of the diode and lower volatge side is connected to positive of the diode for protection.)
