In my schematic, I did have a "FORCEON" (net label) I/O control line to ensure that the toggle power button is ignored during important sequences (EEPROM updates) so we are certainly on the same page.

Looks like a pretty clean solution, but I would think a flip-flop device would be the perfect choice (by nature) for toggling power.
