By that, I presume you mean the "normal" approach of simply having the switch in the supply line to disconnect the battery?

Could you explain why you don't want to do this, as it is obviously by far the easiest & simplest way?

In a battery-operated system like this, it also has the added advantage of drawing absolutely no current at all when OFF!
