It is an app call gkrellm (heaven only knows why) which shows CPU usage, number of procs running, disk and internet usage.

999 out of 1000 times when a linux app crashes it suddenly consumes near 100% cpu so gkrellm is a good indicator of that sort of problem. Fortunately there is no screen of death, you just run an app called top which lists apps by cpu used then kill the culprit.
