No, I wasn't the one pointing out the problem.

I was the one answering your direct question.

One big reason why I like the linear view is that I can do one page load, and then directly read n new posts - every one with an icon "New".

With tree view, I get one post marked "Newest". I don't care which post is newest - I want to know exactly which posts are unread. It may be multiple posts in the tree that are unread.

And in the tree view, I - after having seen the tree - have to do one new page load for every post I want to read. Very slow on days when the server is slow. With the linear view, I just tab to something else while waiting for the page to load. Then mass-read the new posts.
