Everyone else in the world has learned to live with USB->RS232 cables. They are cheap and readily available. And you can move from one laptop or PC to another by simply plug-and-play.

A modern cable will come with modern Vista drivers, or at least you can download any upgrades for a driver.

Your only problems arise when you try to bit-bash the RS232 control lines. Most people gave that up when XP was introduced. And you can guarantee that it will be more difficult with each new o-s.
