I wonder why do you blame Bill Gates for laptops without serial ports? As I have stated in my post, you do get desktops MB with serial ports, usable with Windows OS. Laptops are for a slightly different purpose.
Just as, if you want a large screen (19"+) for PCB layouts, you may not get a laptop with that big a screen.
I find a regular laptop screen ( 14" or 15.4") quite crowded even for code development.
Considering laptops are costlier than desktops, can you not invest a little bit more in a USB to serial converter?

BTW, can you explain in detail that part about using the modem port like a COM port, sounds interesting!
