...that it is quite possible to make a "bad" design using a "good" chip - so the mere presence of an FTDI chip is not a guarantee that they've used it properly!

I have 2 ATen USB-to-Serial adaptors, and they have the annoying feature of using a different COM number for each different USB socket!
My laptop has 4 USB sockets, so that means that they could be on any one of 8 different COM numbers!!

:-(

(they are quite old, so newer ones might be better now...)
