Most probably you must be using the BAFO USB to serial converter which is mostly available in mumbai.I think it is a crap product with buggy driver and even unreliable hardware.Since you are from IIT you may know about a company called nex-robotics.They sell usb to rs232 based on FTDI chip which is much more reliable.

Else if you want to make one you can buy the chip since it is available in Lamington (Mumbai's local electronic supply area)
