Because, very often, what they ask is not really what they actually want - it's just some stuff that they've picked up from some ancient text without realising that the world has moved on.

Then it is perfectly valid to point out that there are other options - and that they would most likely save a lot of time, effort, frustration, and even money.

It's not a matter of "forcing" - it's a matter of ensuring that the OP is fully aware of all the options and implications.
