I think people should have a reasonably complete tool
absolutely.

However, in a way, you make the point, which I agree with, that to be effective, you need to know more than one way.

The problem with printf debugging is that it eats your UART, if the UART communicates with e.g. a sensor, printf debugging (on the one UART uCs) become, at best, difficult.
