#177652 - you are wrong Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Erik, I know that you get tired of reading posts from people that are "wasting" all kinds of time on things that they could purchase for a reasonable price and same money in the long run.
You are wrong, I am, definitely, not 'tired' of reading such posts. I know that an amateur, has a totally different attitude towards money vs time. I am an amateur woodworker and do not go out and buy a $2k dovetail machine, but I DO buy the $50 jig instead of screwing up every joint I make. My recommendations to 'amateurs' re "purchase for a reasonable price" has all been directed towards things where an 'amateur' goes wrong. An example is the Atmel 'programming cable' ($25) where the post "I have made my own and it does not work" is a recurring feature. When I recommend to all to start with a SIlabs devboard (<$100) instead of starting out making something with flying leads not knowing if it is software, hardware, the 'programmer' or something else that makes it not work. Getting your feet wet not knowing which pool the water is in is not an easy task. Likewise, spending a lot of effort using a 'found' (possibly defective) outdated chip, when a new one can be had for $2 makes no sense to me. One related issue is that some 'amateurs' will insist on using the wrong approach, simply because they have some component in a drawer. I will NOT give advice on how to proceed with the wrong approach, and if suggesting doing it right is wrong, I am happy to be wrong. One final point: If someone does not mention "I am an amateur" I respond as to a professional. Erik |
