Another thread made me think of this issue.

THIS APPLIES TO PROFESSONALS working for money ONLY

let me start with an example
you can debug and
a) spend an inordinate time inserting printf statements blinking LEDs and whatever
b) buy an ICE and get done

another:
a) you fight your way through making it in assembler
b) you invest a couple of k in a compiler

I lean heavily towards saving time (=money) by investing in good tools.
