If you take the Logic Level MOSFET IRLZ44N, then you can drive the gate by 5V and don't need 12V. In this case the circuit simplifies to:



If you don't like to connect the NOR-gate with the reset output of MAX1232, then you can take a 74HC04 inverter instead of a 74HC02 NOR-gate. But I would heavily recommend to do it as shown in the scheme...
