ISTR that Jez Smith said he had an 8051 one-clock soft core that ran at 80 MHz in Spartan-II with some caveats (interrupt problems). I'd think that the more modern technology should do better than that.

50 MHz ought to be just about fast enough for most things, though. Now we need enough extra block RAM so we can fully support 64KB of code space and 64KB of data space.
