A cheap FPGA is lower in cost than the $15US per each at q10K that SiLabs has on its website for their cheapest parts.

It's worth the effort just to get rid of the stupid, Stupid, STUPID requirement to clear the TI and RI flags after writing/reading the SBUF.

It's worth the effort just to put in a synchronous serial port capable of a moderate data rate, e.g. 10 Mbps, that's actually useful for something. SiLabs has eliminated that possibility by limiting the data rate.

It's just a mental masturbation project. By the time it's done, if I live that long, there will be no more commercial 805x's as everything will have been switched to ARM and the like. KEIL/ARM will see to that.
