Thanks for the info, guys. For me this is (currently) just a matter of curiosity. As I've mentioned in the past, I'd like to play with FPGAs and whatnot someday, but I'm short on time right at the moment.

A long time ago I got to help design some of the nitty gritty control logic for one of Honeywell's big mainframe CPUs. That was of course a multi-person, multi-year project. It would be really fun to tinker around with some of the same sorts of ideas on a smaller scale on my kitchen table. That's the basis for my casual interest in the freebie cores.
