I was forced once to use 16F84 in an application which needed low consumption, operation at varying voltages and embedded EEPROM - this one was available here then at relatively low cost. Fortunately, that project was cancelled (anyone needs DES for PIC16?).

The instruction set and capabilities made me almost vomit. But I understand their popularity - it IS the same as the popularity of AT89Cxx/AT89Sxx, discussed elsewhere... You need to live outside USA to really get that feeling... :-)
