I'm so used to working with bits that that approach was not immediately obvious. The code and register banking was also an add-on to the original architecture. The PIC18 started to get a little sensible, the PIC24 is a totally different beast. True, which kind of puts comments like "The PIC sells more than the 8051" into perspective.
