I doubt it: "PIC" is just one product line from just one manufacturer; "8051" covers an architecture with literally hundreds of sources.

They are the number one largest producer of MCUs in the world.

That's not the same as saying that "PICs outsell the 8051" though, is it?

Microchip may well sell more MCUs than any one producer of 8051 derivatives (or any other specific architecture), but I very much doubt that they outsel the enitre family of 8051-derivatives?
