If you see how much the contacts of distributor suffer from the sparks, and how quickly the insulation of distributor becomes less and less efficient, then it's clear how unpredictable the distributor's perfomance becomes ofter some months. For a fast speeding motor, where the sparks have less and less time to burn the fuel-air mix in the cylinder this would be deadly.
