Our car (Vauxhall/Opel Zafira) doesn't have HT leads at all - the ignition module mounts directly onto the spark plug terminals. I have heard about new ignition techniques but I didn't remmember it.The one you mentioned is also interesting. It has always been done by "switching techniques" I didn't meant the simple switching of the standard coil.I have heard about higher frequency switching converters.Something like a 12v to 50kv booster .Then e.g. 4 transistor in case of 4-Cylinder engine could be used to fire the proper cylinder at the proper time.This would eliminate the need of Distributor.Some sort of what is being used by the vehicle ECUs today.But i doubt if such a thing is possible cause i don't know if any 50kv capacitor is existed which would be needed for the converter.
