Each row of 4 cylinders had a group of two coils providing four outputs, each connected to a sparking plug. Farshid Jafari Harandi said:
A total of 8 Coils for a 4 cylinder engine ! No - read again; Kai said "Each row of 4 cylinders" - it's a V8!! Looks like a performance engine. It's a Ferrari - what else do you expect?! I think there's no advantage in avoiding ignition coils in future, but in avoiding the distributor! Absolutely: the distrubutor is a mechanical component, so prone to all the wear & tear issues - especially when it's also switching HT voltages!... I suspect that it's also difficult (ie expensive) to get the required timing accuracy? Note that modern systems don't use a coil like the old contact-breaker types (or even the capacitor-discharge types that replaced them). They use high-frequency switching. So these EFI engines with ECU controlled Ignitions do use a seperate Coil for each cylinder ? It would probably be more helpful to think of "a separate HT generator per cylinder" - or, as already noted, more likely "a separate HT generator per pair of cylinders" How do they replace the HV distributor ? See above - the only purpose of a distributor is to distribute(!) the HT from a single HT generator (eg, a traditional coil) amongst multiple spark plugs. Thus, if you have (effectively) a separate HT generator for each cylinder, there is no need for a distributor! Atleast i didn't saw something like 4 coil's in my dad's EFI equipped Peugeot ? Did it have a distributor? Our previous car had EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) and electronically-controlled ignition, but still used a distributor. |
