#105494 - Very well dangerous... Responding to: ???'s previous message |

I got shocked by this Hi-Voltage times to times. If I'll be correct it should be about 5-10KV. Older ignition systems with mechanical interrupter did provide an ignition voltage of about 20kV. This could make an about 2cm long spark in free air (1000V per mm). This voltage wasn't harmful, but painful. The newer transistorized ignition systems, where a special zener protected transistor is used as interrupter, provide an ignition voltage of about 35kV. Not only this high voltage is dangerous, but also the much higher currents, that can flow. These ignition systems can be dangerous and harmful!! Take care!!! The reason why a so high ignition voltage is needed, although the gap of sparking plug isn't wider than 1mm (plus 1mm gap in the distributor), is to guarantee the proper function even if the gap of sparking plug is wet from fuel. Also, when the battery is discharged and the engine is cranked, battery voltage and by this ignition voltage can dramatically break down. By the way, there's a very simple and nice methode to check, whether the isolation of ignition cables is proper: Start the motor and have a look at the ignition cables, but do it in total darkness. If the isolation is damaged, then you will see a blue glimming, right there where "parts" of the ignition voltage leave the cable and run to grounded motor parts. The blue glimming comes from ionized air. Older ignition cables can shine bright and look like a Christmas tree... Stay well, dear Farshid, Kai |
