Ferrari 348, which was built in 1991, had an ignition system without distributor: Each row of 4 cylinders had a group of two coils providing four outputs, each connected to a sparking plug. A power modul existed, containing two separate outputs to drive the two coils. And as Andy already mentioned, "wasted" sparking was used, where each cylinder sees two sparks every 4 cycles, not only in the compression phase, but also in the exchange phase. I think there's no advantage in avoiding ignition coils in future, but in avoiding the distributor! Kai |
